
On this day in 1996, Union Pacific added to its stable of historic rail properties the Southern Pacific yielding the United States’ then newest heavyweight (Class I), with 36,039 track route-miles under its control in all. Union Pacific, steeped as it has been in history, is a name standing the test of time; one that’s been everlasting.
Full disclosure: If there’s another in America that’s lasted longer, I’m hard-pressed to think of it at this time.

I found another: Pinkerton (the detective agency). It was established around 1850 and, according to information on Wikipedia, it’s part of Securitas AB, a Swedish-based company.
Long Island Rail Road was chartered in 1834. Celebrated 190th anniversary last year.
